I couldn't wait for our session - to see little L again (click here check him out as a newborn). One of my top favorite baby stages, when they can sit on their own. Such a handsome little guy, he smiled at me as soon as I walked through the door. He stole my heart with his toothless grin.

This was one of the most sweetest newborn sessions that took place in the residential studio. Such a sweet little baby, very peaceful and mellow. Tiny little peeps from him only when he was hungry.

I'll tell you an embarrassing, but funny, little incident that happened during our session. Most newborns that I photograph, are photographed bare. I always warn parent that accidents do happen, and they usually happen when the mom or dad are holding their baby while I'm photographing them. But not with Porter... he waited until we were switching posing positions and got me right in the FACE! LOL.

Having three kids of my own (two being boys) and photographing bare newborns for years, baby pee and poop doesn't phase me, but I did get a little squirmish when it did hit my face. LOL.

It was still a great session. So here's sweet Porter:

Love when parents bring items that are special to them to incorporate into the session. And super cool that it was ordered as a panoramic size.

I may have mentioned in an earlier blog post about me shooting more family images, but on film. So I would like to show maybe one, or two, or maybe the whole roll of film that I've developed the past week.

I'm a little more patient when shooting with my film camera. It's not like my Nikon D3 where I get that instant gratification on the LCD - to see if I got the perfect shot. With my Nikon film camera, or Holga, or Yashica 124, I really have to be patient to get the perfect shot... there's no looking back at the LCD and deleting any images off the card.

So just for today, I will share two images from my film archives. It's my baby girl, Lili. I'm planning her party and it's hard to believe she's turning 5 years old. Love her to pieces!!

pulled this one from the archives and I laughed. Last night I took pictures of her and she had this same expression - tongue sticking out with a silly little grin! That's my silly Lili!

This is one of my favorite shoots that I look forward to every year. I'm very honored to have the opportunity to help the kids and their families and bring some joy into their lives during their challenging times.

I would like to dedicate this year's session to Ashley Slinker, a 16-year-old sweetheart, who has been battling 2 different types of blood cancers, a bone marrow transplant, and hip surgery, since the age of 12. She still continues to see specialists and Children's Hospital of Milwaukee. Through all of this, she continues to maintain honor roll at her high school and will soon be attending her 1st Prom.

This year, I vowed to take more pictures of my family - but on film. My kids get a kick out of it because they know they can't see the image right away like digital; and love coming with me to the lab to pick up the developed film to see what was taken.

Sometimes I'm a little slow on taking my film to the lab, like this one of little girl and pup, that I just recently developed. This was taken over a year ago at a dog park.

Last week I had the wonderful privilege of working with Flashes of Hope at Children's Hospital of Milwaukee. It's one of the most humbling and rewarding experiences as a volunteer photographer.

This post is mainly a thank you to the coordinator, Bill Owens, who founded the Milwaukee Chapter in 2008. We appreciate all the hard work he puts into the Milwaukee Chapter.

While I don't have sneak peeks ready from our sessions, I do have a quick one to share of Bill and me:

Well it looks like the snow has started coming down. Big fluffy snowflakes, the kind you like to catch with your tongue. And of course, my little girl did just that before we headed off to school today. She is a fan of snow. It doesn't bother her one bit that it could be -10 degrees, she wants to be outside playing in it. So just a couple of images to share of my little baby.

Last night's session was a blast. This family has a special place in my heart - that's cause they're my wonderful neighbors. I know Mrs. T has been wanting a family session for the longest time, so I was thrilled that the fall weather was perfect last night.

What was also nice was that she allowed her boys to bring an item that was a part of them. Garrett has been playing soccer for quite a while and I love hearing his stories about his games and tournaments while I drive him to school. Karsten is learning guitar and I've had the pleasure of hearing him play during our bonfires.

It's hard to believe this sweet little baby is now roughly 18 months old. It seems just like yesterday I was photographing him and his beautiful family in their home.

This session was perfect... the weather, location, and the high school senior guy! He was so easy to photograph - tons of great smiles, even when I kept telling him to have his serious face on for the camera.

This is one of my top favorites from the session. A group of girls were walking past cheering him on while I was taking his portraits. And what a trooper, he just kept posing and smiling for the camera instead of shying away.

I know it has been way too long since I last posted on the blog. I become so focused on working with clients' galleries, that I put the blog in the back burner :( Shame on me. But I do have some studio news...

For outdoor sessions, I'm currently booked for the rest of September and all weekends in October. I do have a few October weeknights available for an early evening session (indoor sessions such as newborns and lifestyle sessions, please contact me for further information on available dates). So I took a little break this early evening and decided to take my daughter out to enjoy the last of our warm weather. I never have any troubles getting this girl to let me take pictures of her... so I thought tonight would be a good night to spend a little time with her and let me capture some of her silliness.

This is all her idea. Pose with an attitude.

And even in our own mini session, I sometimes get the "Photographer's Child Syndrome." She's our little drama queen.

I had another wonderful evening session with these two fun siblings. This was scheduled as a very special session - dad secretly set an appointment for a session to gift his wife, Chris, prints from the session for her birthday. This isn't the first time that dad did this, so to make it a little different than last time, we designed a Coffee Table Album for her.

Our Coffee Table Albums are one of our specialty items that we offer. Our most popular size is a 10x10. But since the dad wanted the images a tad bit bigger in the album, he upgraded to the 12x12, which makes the images even more stunning. The albums have thick, lay-flat pages with no middle gutter. We offer several different paper choices such as linen, watercolor, or recycled art paper.

This was dad's favorite. He also gifted his wife a canvas portrait of her image choice. But he's secretly hoping it'll be this one of their kids. He really loves how natural they were laughing that evening.

This was such an inspirational experience to capture the smile and laughter of these children who are battling a serious illness. They bring inspiration and hope to us all. I'm very honored to be a part of the Milwaukee Chapter through Children's Hospital.

A big thank you to Bill Owens, Chapter Director, Kimberly Ann Photography for assisting, Mary, our make-up artist and the volunteers that help make this photo experience a success.

Kimberly Ann dedicates her volunteer time to this foundation in honor of Meaghan Rath, an 11-year-old sweetheart, who as of this morning, April 27th, 2010, lost her battle to cancer.

As mentioned earlier, my son just turned 8. This weekend we're celebrating his birthday with the Diary of a Wimpy kid theme. He has every Diary book - including the Journal and enjoys reading the books over and over.

And as usual, I order the birthday cake from Eat Cake Milwaukee and I'm impressed each time, Debbie designs a fantastic looking cake to go with the theme. And not only are her cakes beautiful to look at, they are very tasty too!

at 6:41 am, this handsome boy was born. He had the most quietest, sweetest cry I've ever heard. As I held him for the first time, he sucked his thumb and stared at me. Such an emotional experience, so hard to explain in words.

Now here he is, starring at me, at almost eye level, in his new First Communion suit. It's hard to believe how much he has grown into such a young boy.

Today we broke a little tradition that we do every year... dye Easter eggs using crayons (for drawing) and food coloring (mixed w/ vinegar) or using a Paas kit. I came across an article about decorating eggs using glitter (Family Circle April issue), which looked so pretty in the magazine. Plus it looked like an easy project to do with the kids. Headed over to Michaels and bought all the supplies for the glittery eggs, plus some paint.

The painting of the eggs went well. My boys loved the idea of painting the eggs. A bit messy for my three-year-old daughter; thank goodness for washable paint! The glitter - not prepared for the mess!! Shiny, sparkly glitter everywhere. And my eggs look NOTHING like the article pictures. LOL.

But in the end, my kids had fun doing something different this year.

Oh, and another tradition that was changed - hiding of the eggs. Normally the Easter bunny hides the eggs we decorate. Well since we glittered the eggs, I didn't want all the glitter around the house. So I said to my oldest that I was going to talk to the bunny and have her just hide the non-glitter eggs. Well after seeing my three-year-old's painted egg - which looks like it has 20 coats of paint on it and will be done drying for 2011's Easter egg hunt, I said to my husband that maybe we should just have the bunny hide plastic eggs this year. Well my son heard me say that and wrote this note which I thought was cute:

"Dear Easter Bunny,
Please Don't Hide the
Glider eggs and Don't
Hide the Paint and Glider eggs
that are mixed. Your frind
Tony :)

Just want to share one image from earlier this year that was captured in my residential studio. I've been photographing the family for the past few years and it's always a joy to see them. Having three kids of my own (plus a dog), I know their house if full of laughter and craziness!! But these boys are ever so sweet and fun when working with them. Hopefully I'll get to see them later this year... maybe when Owen is walking?! That'll be a fun session!

a favorite snack

A few months ago I found this recipe in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel paper for Pumpkin Trail Mix, which is really easy to make. Plus it's a hit with my three-year-old daughter too... a simple snack for her to enjoy.

Ingredients:

2 cups baby pumpkin seeds
1 cup slivered almonds
¾ cup raw sunflower seeds
6 tablespoons pure Grade B maple syrup
Coarse salt
1 cup dried cherries or cranberries

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

In large bowl, toss pumpkin seeds, almonds and sunflower seeds and the syrup until evenly coated. Spread nuts and seeds out in an even single layer on the lined baking sheets and season with salt to taste. Place in preheated oven and bake, stirring several times with spatula or wooden spoon, until just golden, about 20 minutes.

Cool mixture completely on pan, then add cherries and toss to combine. Store cooled trail mix in an airtight container at room temperature.

If you're having trouble finding the nuts, seeds and syrup at your local grocery store, I know you can get them at Good Harvest Market in Pewaukee. They have a wide variety of nuts and seeds to choose from plus natural and organics foods too.

I made this batch with cranberries and about 5 tablespoons of the maple syrup. It makes about 6 cups. Enjoy!

We (as in my whole family) drove to Chicago to meet 4 week old AJ. My husband and AJ's dad grew up together, so it was nice to visit an old friend, his beautiful wife and meet his new little one. AJ is adorable in every way... with the cutest little smile and chubby little cheeks.

It was an honor and amazing experience to be able to meet such brave children and their wonderful families and caregivers. I dedicate my work to this foundation because it is near and dear to my heart as I have lost my cousin Hector, my cousin Veronica, and my aunt Martha who have lost their battle to cancer.

And a big thank you to the staff and nurses at Children's Hospital of Milwaukee for volunteering their time and efforts and to Kimberlyann Photography for assisting me.

My new obsession... Tea.

And not just any tea, loose-leaf tea. I've always like green tea (especially since I'm not a coffee drinker), and during the cold winter months here in Milwaukee, it's nice to have a hot cup drink in the morning.

And recently, I've become quite addicted to Teavana (located in Mayfair Mall). Not knowing much about teas, I decided to take a visit. The workers were super nice and personable; it was like taking a Tea Class - 101. I learned the health benefits of tea, why loose-leaf vs bagged tea, and the different types of teas (and you can smell the different flavors too).

Since I liked green tea and wanted a little fruity flavor to it, I decided to try Green Tea Heaven. And believe me, it's Heaven in a cup, with a light fruity taste. From their website:

"A lavishly aromatic blend of Sencha green tea with strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb, and red currants. By adding a fruity sweetness to the naturally good Sencha, this tea becomes exceptional. You'll enjoy every cup!"

Yum!

I also purchased some Chamomile Tea and Peppermint Organic Tea (mixed together, a perfect blend to drink before night time).

And shown here, Utopian Jewel Oolong Tea (another fruity flavor) and next to it, German Rock Cane Sugar (reminds me of the rock candy on a stick... remember those as a kid?).

I'm spending my Valentine morning with my three beautiful kids. I gave them each their own little Valentine bag of goodies and tons of hugs and kisses from me.

And I'm just waiting for my husband to come home from work today to give him his little bag of goodies... yummy chocolate from Allô! Chocolat in the historic downtown Waukesha. Mouth watering chocolate covered strawberries, mint melt-a-ways, and fairy food (sponge candy)... and of course tons of hugs and kisses from me too.

Keep in mind, I'm not a product photographer, but just had to share the yummy chocolate dipped strawberries that I ordered yesterday and had to refrain from taking a bite. Hopefully my husband will be sweet and share one with me. ;)

Since my oldest was off of school on Friday, my sweet husband took off of work and we decided to make it a day with the kids. We took a trip to the The Mitchell Park Domes in Milwaukee to see the Lego Land Model Railroad Show. Here are a few snapshots from the show:

After lunch at the Domes, we headed over to BBC Lighting in Milwaukee. Some may cringe on taking their kids to a lighting showroom, but it was actually fun for them. They serve free popcorn - which keeps my kids occupied. There's a bunch of antiques such as Merry-Go-Rounds, funky, colorful lighting (for example - a stop light. My kids thought it was the coolest light there and that we should buy it for our new house - LOL!) and other odd things for sale. Too bad I didn't bring my camera inside. Maybe next time.

So that was our family fun day on a Friday. Can't wait to do it again!

Ms. Stezala will conduct a free one-hour workshop, “Scholarships 101,” for college-bound students and their families. Attendees will gain street-smart advice on how to approach the scholarship process like a pro, learn the best scholarship tactics and review the six most common mistakes. Ms. Stezala is the owner of www.scholarshipstreet.com, and author of Scholarships 101: The Real-World Guide to Getting Cash for College (Amazon 2008).

Background:
According to the Project on Student Debt, Wisconsin ’s college graduates from Class of 2007 owed nearly $20,000, on average, in student loans. Scholarships are a source of money for college that does not have to be repaid but students must compete to win scholarships. The workshop will give students strategies for a competitive edge.

Ms. Stezala is a Milwaukee resident with a long career in helping students and families achieve their educational goals. She is currently a consultant to youth programs, community organizations, scholarship providers and other nonprofit organizations.

Another year has passed and sweet baby Anna turned a year old. I've been so lucky to capture her as a newborn and at 6 months old... Look at her now! Ready for toddlerhood. Look at all her hair - that you can put a clip in it!! She still has her smiling blue eyes - just like her daddy.

And we can't forget about big sister Emily, who turns 3 on Saturday - WOO-HOO! She loves princesses, such as Cinderella and Ariel. Isn't Emily a doll!

We’re looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest.

Models Search Special:

$75 entrance fee, which includes a 30 minute model session for your child held at your home (travel fees may apply if out of local area), one 5x7 and one image (photographer's choice) submitted to the national gallery.

Finalists will be determined by online votes. Anyone may vote. Each vote is $1, and all proceeds from votes benefit the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. (NILMDTS.org)

My 2.5 year old daughter loves to sit next to me when I'm working on images. So as I was downloading this sweet newborn images onto my computer, I pulled this image up (and it loads pretty big onto my screen) to take a quick peek, and the first thing she said was, "Hello baby." (Oh how I wish I could have recorded her sweet tiny little voice when she said that). Not only did she melt my heart saying that, the picture melted it even more. He's such a sweet newborn at nine days old...

watching the snowflakes yesterday? These were taken yesterday afternoon when the snowflakes were big and beautiful. Perfect for snowflake catching and snowballs. But not so fun today shoveling it off our driveway!! It looks like the snow totals varied greatly around the Milwaukee area. Brookfield / Waukesha Area received about 6 inches of snow and Random Lake receiving about 10 inches of snow!!!

The office will be closed December 21st - January 11th, 2009. As some of you know, my house is under major construction and this will be a great time for me help out with the finishing touches. This year I was asked to help La Causa, Inc. in their Celebrity Waiters auction. The lucky auction winner won a children's portrait session and a mounted 16x20 wall print. But I really think the lucky winner was me... because I got to meet this adorable, beautiful little girl. She was beautifully dressed in my favorite colors, has gorgeous sparkling eyes, and a beautiful smile.

The session took place in the downtown Milwaukee area and you can tell she loved the outdoors. Enjoying her stroller ride and watching the people go by.
